San Juan Capistrano is a charming town rich with history. From the Mission that father Junipero Serra founded, to the quaint downtown that is home to the swallows festival as well as some of the best Mexican food around. President Nixon knew the spot well as he would have his chef from El Adobe preparing a special dish for him.
The mission is a spectacular site. Father Serra named the town after Saint John of Capistrano, a Franciscan missionary and preacher of the 1300-1400’s. The swallows come to the mission during the spring only to leave on Saint John of Capistrano’s birthday, October 23.
Imagining this city’s early life with native Americans and settlers settling nearby could transport anyone back to the 1600’s. It can be hard to picture that those beautiful rolling hills that are great for mountain biking or for viewing the whole stunning lookout, as well as the serene and solitary crosses that sit perched high were once hills of shelter for many long long ago.
